3. Difficult Conversations – your approach and outcomes
Toxic skill level – "During a particularly challenging
time in my life [when I was supporting my father in his final
days], I approached my manager to discuss my mental health
struggles. Instead of offering support, they told me to 'leave
personal issues at home' and implied that I was using it as an
excuse for poor performance."
Low skill level – “I haven't had any difficult
conversations regarding mental health or personal well-being.
I prefer to avoid those discussions, because it is either none
of my business or I don’t want to say the wrong thing”
High skill level – “I noticed a team member exhibiting
signs of chronic stress and emotional distress. I scheduled a
private meeting, expressing my concern and creating a safe
space for them to share their experiences. I actively
listened, offered empathy, and collaborated on finding
solutions. Together, we developed a plan to modify their
workload, provided access to counselling services, and ensured
ongoing support. The outcome was improved well-being,
increased productivity, and strengthened trust between us.
